Becoming a better you in quarantine

Updated: May 17, 2021

Many of us are impatiently waiting to go to our favorite brunch spot for bottomless mimosas, our first trip to TJ Maxx, or our first workout in the gym post-quarantine. As miserable as it is living in the midst of history, this extra “me time” is something many of us need to become better individuals. I decided to write a blog post sharing tips to become a better you during quarantine.

Tip 1: Catch up on much needed sleep. I know for many of us college students and 20 somethings, sleep is usually a luxury. Take this time to treat your mental to 8 (or more) hours of sleep. Take that nap you’ve dreamt of for months. Take this time to breathe. Enjoy waking up when your body wants to and not when your alarm clock yells at you to get ready for your 9 am class. Becoming a better you doesn’t always mean increasing productivity, it can mean taking care of yourself from the inside out.

Tip 2: Plan your day out. Continue using your planner to keep a routine in your life. Set aside time for school, work, and self-care. Setting daily goals keeps you busy so you don’t feel like your days are never ending, which can sometimes lead to self-destructive thoughts.

Tip 3: Find a quarantine-safe hobby. I personally recommend journaling and writing poetry because they offer time for much needed self-reflection to work on becoming a more healed person post-quarantine. Other hobbies include art, reading, cooking, at home workouts, listening to podcasts, etc.

Tip 4: Declutter your life. Although covid-19 snatched our spring break plans, you now have lots of time to spring clean. Get rid of old clothes. Clean out your fridge. Organize your pantry. Start fresh! Decluttering your space positively impacts your mental health.

Tip 5: Find your purpose/your “why”. if you’ve been struggling with wondering what path your life will lead you, your job doesn’t excite you anymore, or you’ve been experiencing an early mid-life crisis, take this time to self-reflect and figure out what lights a fire within you and how you can capitalize to turn your passion into your profession.

Tip 6: Rebrand yourself. Give your social media accounts a professional makeover. Take this time to update your LinkedIn profile, your professional resume, and cover letter.

Tip 7: Remember to self-care. Self-care can include doing a facial, taking a relaxing bubble bath, indulging in a glass (or 3) of your favorite wine, taking a virtual shopping trip to your favorite store, listening to music, or just catching up on your favorite show while eating your favorite snack. It’s important that you treat yourself as your number one priority and you are acknowledging your emotions during this pandemic.

The overarching theme for becoming a better you is to become intentional. Become intentional about healing and loving yourself. Become intentional on taking time to check in on family members you might’ve neglected during your busy schedule. Become intentional about wanting to use this time to better yourself instead of lying in bed all day.

* Completed for “Introduction to Public Relations”. This is a piece created during peak quarantine catered towards those who are having a hard time coping with our new normal. This is an individual writing piece where I was able to educate others after researching best self care practices as well as voice my own opinion.
